Diwali - the festival of lights

 Written by Arohan Banik

Diwali is an Indian festival. It is all about festival of lights. It needs lots of preparation. In Diwali, we do rangoli, we make a lot of foods, we light up dias (lamps), we decorate our house with LED lights, we make dias with paper and we blast fire crackers. During Diwali, in Kolkata, people celebrate Kali Pujo. People go to pandal to meet God Ma Kali. People also go to many pandals to pray other Gods. They eat food from restaurants. Children play and have fun. There are lots of LED lights around the streets. I miss Kolkata so much during Diwali. In this festival, we wear Kurta Pajama. The Kurta Pajama is a type of traditional dress we wear in every Indian festival. The traditional dresses make you more spectacular for puja celebration. These also make people understand that we are Indians.

This time, Pranay and Shweta joined us for the celebration. They gifted me a yellow car, and I got surprised. I helped my dad for fixing the LED lights, by sticking the colouring bands at the balcony shed, and I did rangoli with my mom. I helped her in making the design of rangoli by giving the spoon and fork. Then, I got the cleaner spray for my mom to clean the edges of the rangoli. I also helped Shweta by tracing the crescent shape and candle shape of the paper dias.

In the evening, we turned all the LED lights on, and then we all went to a big parking lot to light the fire crackers. We had sparkles, ground bloom flowers and rockets. I put a rocket in a bottle and then I lighted up with a candle, and when the rocket went up to the sky, it blasted and it was colourful in the sky. The ground bloom flowers were in the shape of a small cylinder. I again lighted a candle and put it on a small rope. Then a little sparkle came, then it stopped. Then suddenly it buzzed around loudly and at the end a big flame came out of the ground bloom flower.

My mom and Shweta made some special dishes and sweets for dinner. We exchanged the sweets and foods with our neighbours and they also gave us sweets and snacks. Finally, we ate our dinner together. Diwali was super exciting because we did lots of fun activities. I wish, next year we can celebrate Diwali in India.
