Image
Written by Arohan Banik From my last visit to NYC, from the observation deck at 86th floor of the Empire State Building Big buildings, that’s everyone’s dream to live in. But do you know that countries are facing a tough competition that who will build the tallest building in the world? Once most of the tallest buildings have been built in New York city (NYC). But the first tallest one was the Philadelphia city hall, built in 1901 in Philadelphia and it was 548 feet tall. At the top of the Philadelphia city hall, there is a statue of William Penn who is known for the freedom of religion.  The next tallest building is the Singer building in NYC, it was also called as the early skyscraper! it was a very narrow building, the narrow part was the top, and the bottom is a rectangular prism. It was built in 1908. The third building is the MetLife tower. It is also a shorter name of Metropolitan life tower built in NYC. It was a pyramid shaped on the top of the building, beneath the ...

Written by Arohan Banik  Once, an evil king lived in India, who was also known as a demon king. His name was Hiranyakashyap and he thought that he was the most powerful king of the whole world. He wanted everyone to pray to him. But Hiranyakashyap’s son, Prahlad, a brave, small boy was not scared at all. He didn't pray to his father because Prahlad was a devotee of one God named Lord Vishnu. The king was very angry and he tried to scare Prahlad, but he was not afraid. Prahlad still did not even pray to him, not even once. Then the king got extremely mad and wanted to hurt him. The king’s sister named Holika had a spooky power. Holika could sit on fire. The demon king forced Prahlad to sit on Holika’s lap so he can be burnt by the fire from Holika. But when Prahlad sat on Holika's lap, something unusual happened, the fire could not burn Prahlad, rather, Holika got burnt in the fire. This happened because of Lord Vishnu, who protected Prahlad from the fire by using one of his pow...

A kindergarten boy’s journey through a pandemic

Image
Written by Arohan Banik December 2019, near a seafood market in Wuhan, China there were some bats which spread one type of virus called coronavirus to one person. Later he or she got infected by the virus and then it started to spread to dozens of them. After 3 to 4 months, the situation got even worse. By then it has spread to most of the countries in the world and many people died. Then countries made lockdown and people won't meet each other, so they cannot be infected by the virus. Later scientists found more information about the virus and advised people for maintaining 6 feet distance across each other for lowering the spread of the virus. People were also wearing a mask so the virus can’t go into someone’s nose and mouth. Because of this pandemic my school closed on March 12, 2020. Teachers were worried for the infection and wanted to come up with an idea so the kids can still do school. Later the teachers got an idea that doing online classes was the best option to choose...

Bennu, the asteroid. Images captured by a NASA spacecraft called OSIRIS-REx. Written by Arohan Banik We will go on a big adventure in space. Are you ready? Let’s go! Space is a mysterious place where there are planets, stars, nebula, etc. It is pitch dark and it is a mystery whether aliens exist out there or not. I watched many space videos and by watching, I got interested to it. The solar system has 8 planets. So, Mercury is the first planet and the smallest planet in our solar system. Next is Venus. It is the hottest planet in our solar system. It is also called Earth’s sister. Because they are almost the same size. The Earth is home. It is called a Goldilocks planet because it is not too hot or not to cold, it is just the right temperature for staying alive. Mars is the 4th planet of our solar system. It is called the red planet, because there is reddish dust. Next is Jupiter. It is the 5th planet and the biggest planet in our solar system. It has a big red spot which is ...

My date with a Microscope

Image
Written by Arohan Banik Sometime in the beginning of December, Pranay and Shweta ordered something from Amazon. But I didn't know what was inside the box. Then I asked Shweta that what is inside, she said that there are some math books for Pranay. I thought that they were telling the truth. Then I kept asking Pranay that when you will open the box, but he said that I will open it after a few days. It was December 9th, on my birthday, when I cut my birthday cake at night, they gifted me the same amazon box. When I opened the box, it was a Microscope!! Then I finally knew that they were joking. It was a surprise!! The time when I opened the cardboard box, I saw a big suitcase with the microscope. There were slides, cover slips, petri dish, collecting vials and more. So, with that, I could see cells with the microscope. The colour of the microscope is white and the base is black. The box also had an instruction because there are chemicals that are dangerous for me. The microscope is...

Diwali - the festival of lights

Image
Written by Arohan Banik Diwali is an Indian festival. It is all about festival of lights. It needs lots of preparation. In Diwali, we do rangoli, we make a lot of foods, we light up dias (lamps), we decorate our house with LED lights, we make dias with paper and we blast fire crackers. During Diwali, in Kolkata, people celebrate Kali Pujo. People go to pandal to meet God Ma Kali. People also go to many pandals to pray other Gods. They eat food from restaurants. Children play and have fun. There are lots of LED lights around the streets. I miss Kolkata so much during Diwali. In this festival, we wear Kurta Pajama. The Kurta Pajama is a type of traditional dress we wear in every Indian festival. The traditional dresses make you more spectacular for puja celebration. These also make people understand that we are Indians. This time, Pranay and Shweta joined us for the celebration. They gifted me a yellow car, and I got surprised. I helped my dad for fixing the LED lights, by stickin...

All about Cricket

Image
Written by Arohan Banik I like to play cricket so much. But when I was a small child, I didn't know how to play. When me and my dad were watching cricket matches in the TV, I asked many questions. And when I watched and watched, I learnt some things about cricket. First, my dad brought me a baseball bat and a ball and then I started playing in the drawing room. After that, my dad took me to a parking lot in the evening. And when I started playing, I lost 3 to 4 games. But after that I batted really well. I got fifties, hundreds. But only 1 world record. But still I didn't learn how to ball that time. But slowly, slowly I learned how to ball. One day I had a match with my dad. This time was my batting. I made a world record. My score was 150. Suddenly I got out!! Now it was very impossible that my dad couldn’t score so many runs!!!!! He just scored 7 runs and got out! I finally won!!!!! We were going to play cricket again. This was a very close match. I was batting now, and ...
